Ishan Panpaliya is a 12th grader pursuing an International Baccalaureate diploma at Skyline High School in Sammamish, Washington, USA. He has a deep interest in several disciplines - mathematics, computer science, neuroscience, and the arts. In his spare time, Ishan plays the Indian percussion instrument, tabla, and loves to go biking on the trails of Washington.

Experience

Overview

Ishan produced novel research that applied machine learning, statistics, and computer science, to classify medical image data—most notably, differentiating between COVID, pneumonia, and other lung infections, on X-ray scans.

Volunteerism

He is an avid volunteer. He is a math and language tutor at the “Learn in Shelter,” a non-profit platform for K-12 students in need during the pandemic. He also volunteered as a disability notetaker at Carnegie Mellon University. In the summer of 2019, he organized the ACIT Summer Concert Workshop, which allowed students the opportunity to play with a well-known Seattle sitar player and develop their improvisation skills in a low–pressure environment.

App Development

Ishan co-founded the project “Helping Hands” as part of the Indian Association of Western Washington’s Civics department as a response to the medical crisis happening in India, which saw an under-resourced medical system failing to cope with large numbers of sick patients. He led a team of six coders and four graphic designers to develop a chatbot in English and Hindi which provided credible information around mask-wearing, sanitation, virus biology, and treatment procedures.

Competitions

Ishan placed in the top 5% of all United States Math competition participants when he qualified at American Invitational Mathematics Examination (2021) and passed the American Mathematical Competitions (2021). Ishan started participating in math and science competitions at a young age. He won the North-South Foundation Science Bee in Kansas (2016), won the Alaska Brain Bee (2020), and won the North-South Foundation Brain Bee (2019). He has been a school finalist and district qualifier for the 2018 and 2019 Reflections Art competitions.

Extracurricular

  • Organized Emerging Scholars Math Competition for 70+ middle school and high school students intended to generate interest in mathematics and boost proficiency in the arena of timed problem-solving.

  • Authored ESMC exam paper consisting of 25 questions to be solved within 75 minutes on the topics of Algebra, Geometry, Combinatorics and Probability, Graph Interpretation, Statistics and Number Theory.

  • Hosted Math Contests Decoded Webinar for 100+ students to motivate kids to join math competitions by sharing my own journey into math olympiad and showcasing strategies to excel in math contests and solve interesting math problems.

Decoding Numbers

Decoding Numbers is a primer for mathematics enthusiasts preparing for all levels of competition. This book aims to simplify the concepts required for mathematics contests through easy-to-understand language and examples of the problem–solving process. Moreover, it aims to distinguish itself by gradually transitioning between both basic concepts and advanced theorems in the each chapter. Topics such as Functions, Combinatorics, Number Theory, Algebra, Graph Theory, and more are covered in depth with plenty of sample questions to go along.
